Paper craft project no. 289: Sending happy birthday wishes to you, Shirley!

2014-10-26 Sending happy birthday wishes

Today, we’re celebrating the birthday of one of the most creative cardmakers I know: Shirley B.! I “met” Shirley nearly a year ago when she started playing over at STAMPlorations. It was just Nonni and me on the design team and we put out a DT call. Shirley responded to the call with 3 entries (here, here, and here). Each one was so creative that I knew I wanted her on the team. And I think STAMPlorations is the first design team that Shirley joined so I’m giving myself a big thump on the back for snagging a talent like her! Didn’t stop there, though, because Shirley is now also a stamp designer through her own line, The Bee’s Knees, and nothing makes me prouder than to have her designing and illustrating stamps along with me! Again, I’m giving myself a big thump on the the back for “discovering” her as a stamp designer ;o)

And so to celebrate her birthday, I made this one layer card featuring the super-cool doodled bouquet from the Rosebuds set that she designed. It was tough to not use her stamps right away when I got them. I usually immediately break out new stamps before I’m even done designing their packaging. But I wanted the first time I used Shirley’s stamps to be on a card I make for her so it’s no easy feat that I held out for over a month!

Shirley loves watercoloring. And Distress inks. And sloshing. And spattering. So I made sure my card met all those criteria ;o) So I stamped the bouquet several times (masking as I went along) then sloshed Distress inks on the buds —  first with diluted spun sugar, then diluted barn door, and then lastly not-so-diluted barn door. Then I happily sloshed/watercolored antique linen, scattered straw, and broken china all over. I added a bit of texture to the background by stamping the rosebud definition stamp in antique linen ink. Oh, and the spatters…we can’t have a Shirley card without spatters! So I happily spattered some broken china, scattered straw, and barn door all over the card. And because I’m such a font-nerd, I created a custom sentiment by combining stamps from this set, this set, and this set. (Gotta love our sentiment sets…you can come up with a gazillion sentiments with them!) This card’s on its way to you, Shirley, so I hope you like it :o)

Maria, another STAMPlorations girl, is hosting a virtual birthday party for Shirley so check out the cards made by fellow crafters who are celebrating Shirley’s birthday!

I’d like to link this up to the following fun challenges: Seize the Birthday – Anything Goes (I skipped the optional washi tape toppings) and Simon Says Monday Challenge – Anything Goes.

Thanks for stopping by!
